The commercial pet food industry has a secret to hide and Ann Martin wants to make sure you know it. Her research reveals some startling facts: that the pet food industry conducts animal testing in order to improve their product, and includes euthanized cats and dogs in the mix to heighten protein content. In this revised and updated edition, Martin continues to explore the shocking processes by which commercial pet foods are produced. She offers alternative recipes for feeding pets, nutritional advice, and an exploration of "Pet Peeves," in which she explores several scams aimed at pet owners. This groundbreaking book gives us a glimpse into exactly what we are doing when we buy pet food.
I've known that pretty much most commercial dog food was bad, but I really didn't know HOW bad it was. After the 2007 recall mess, I thought that all of my research leading me to a "premium" dog food meant we were in good hands. After the addition of our newest adopted Greyhound, we were faced with some boo boo tummy issues. I found myself online again looking for another "premium" food, but it wasn't until our vet had me put our young man on Royal Canin (the other foods weren't working) that I finally decided that I need to be cooking for my dogs. The first three ingredients of that food sent me running back to get online and start searching. There are a lot of good books out there, but Ann has been at this for awhile, and many of her facts confirmed what I hoped wasn't true. So much of it all makes sense now when I think back. Also, I grew up the daughter of a butcher, so when Ann talks about the slaughter houses and rendering plants, I have no doubts in what she is saying. I've actually been vegetarian for eight years now (with vegan training wheels) because of what I know what goes on in those places convinced me that I needed to change my eating habits. Why not for my dogs, too? This is an excellent book to start with as it gives great info on why you need to start cooking for your own. You probably already know that you need to do this because you're searching reading material out. This is definitely a book to have in your pet food library!
